Anthara Shivkumar
Anthara Shivkumar is a classically trained singer and actor based in New York City and Connecticut. She attended Wagner College, majoring in Music Vocal Performance. She’s classically trained in Indian Carnatic Classical music and Opera and works in New York City performing in various styles such as Pop, Musical Theatre, Indian Film Songs and Jazz.
Early Life & Education
Growing up she performed for local theatre companies and Indian Associations in her home state of Connecticut, which fostered her love for performing. After playing the role of the Pirate King in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance, she realized musical theatre was her true passion.
She went on to play iconic roles such as Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast Jr., Princess Jasmine in Aladdin, Golde in Fiddler on the Roof, and Maria in The Sound of Music.
After receiving the award for ‘Outstanding Performer’ in her competitive Show Choir ‘Choral Spectrum’, the ‘Richard R. Lesbenes’ Scholarship for outstanding work in performing arts from South Windsor High School and First Place in CT PAC’s Connecticut’s Got Talent, she went on to pursue theatre and music in college.
Career & Stage Performances
In recent years Anthara has had the honor of performing at prestigious New York City venues including The Reverie Room, Green Room 42, 54 Below, Carnegie Hall and most notably, she performed as the opening act for the Radio City Rockettes’ Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall with her Premier Collegiate A Capella group ‘Vocal Synergy’.
She made her Off-Off-Broadway debut as Goddess Hera in Showpeople Theatre Collective’s original musical To The Fairest at the New York Theatre Festival in December of 2023.
Filmography & Recent Work
Some of her favorite roles she’s played in more recent years include Chirag Gupta in Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Countess Almaviva in Mozart’s Opera Le Nozze Di Figaro, and Molag in Firebringer.
She’s even worked on screen, playing the role of Nancy Cordez in the Malayalam film Checkmate, as well as lending her voice for multiple original songs in short films.
Artistry & Teaching
When she’s not performing and singing her heart out on stage, Anthara can be found writing her own music and teaching acoustic and electric guitar, piano, ukulele, violin, acting and voice lessons.
She prides herself in her ability to provide students with a safe space to express themselves and grow as musicians while also making music accessible as an art form for people from all walks of life.
As an artist influenced by Lin Manuel Miranda and Shreya Ghoshal alike, she strives to be a versatile artist who can entertain any audience and is excited to continue sharing her culture, her talent, and her journey with the world.
